Statement from Chair Brenda Lawrence on the Passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson

Southfield, MI – The Oakland County Democratic Party joins the nation in mourning the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson — civil rights leader, faith leader, and history-making presidential candidate.

During Black History Month, as we honor the trailblazers and transformational “firsts” who shaped our democracy, we reflect on Rev. Jackson’s extraordinary impact. He was the first Black man to become a viable candidate for President of the United States, fundamentally expanding the political imagination of this country and empowering millions of Americans who had long been excluded from the political process.

His historic presidential campaigns built broad, multiracial coalitions rooted in justice, economic opportunity, and equal representation. Rev. Jackson’s leadership helped pave the way for future generations — including the historic election of President Barack Obama — and reshaped what was possible in American politics.

Through his work with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and decades of advocacy, Rev. Jackson championed voting rights, labor rights, economic fairness, and civil rights. His call to “Keep Hope Alive” became a rallying cry that continues to inspire leaders and activists across the country.

“Rev. Jesse Jackson showed America that our democracy is strongest when every voice is heard,” said Brenda Lawrence, Chair of the Oakland County Democratic Party. “He broke barriers, expanded opportunity, and reminded us that hope must be coupled with action. His legacy will continue to guide us as we work toward a more just and equitable future.”

The Oakland County Democratic Party extends our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all those whose lives were touched by his leadership and courage.

As we commemorate Black History Month, we recommit ourselves to the work of building the inclusive democracy Rev. Jackson fought for — and to keeping hope alive.
